Willie Mays

If Willie Mays was up to bat and Satchel Page was pitching who would win this contest?
Willie Mays was one of the best black baseball players of all time. Satchel Page was one of the best pitchers of all time. Satchel came out of the Negro leagues before blacks were allowed to play in the Majors. He later joined the Majors in his last few years of his career. He was a legend in the Negro league among other negro legends like Josh Gibson(The Black Babe Ruth). Anyway, who would take who out if Willie Mays was facing Satchel Page. Old schoolers you’re more than welcome to give your opinion on this because you know more about it than I do. However, everyone’s invited on this one.
of course, Mr Mays the say hey kid and one of my favorite players ever, the man spent four years in the army, and missed four years of his brilliant career . he would have hit 800 home runs.what a showdown it is in the ninth inning and bases loaded Mays comes up to bat against satch. satch throws and willie swings strike one. satch pulls his hat off and wipes the sweat off his face, he winds up and throws a fastball! and crack willie hits a triple and the giants win the world series 8 to 5.!!!! well i can wish!!

Willie Mays Aikens $25.99 An intimate portrait of a tortured player, this memoir culls interviews, letters, and the personal account of baseball legend Willie Mays Aikens. Touted from a young age as the next Reggie Jackson, Aikens’ promising career quickly turned disastrous when he fell into drug abuse and was ultimately sentenced to the longest prison time ever given to a professional athlete. Not only an exploration of baseball and culture in the 1980s, this book also delves into the United States justice and penal systems. |

Willie Mays: The Life, The Legend $20.89 Authorized by Willie Mays and written by a New York Times bestselling author, this is the definitive biography of one of baseball’s immortals. Considered to be "as monumental — and enigmatic — a legend as American sport has ever seen" ( Sports Illustrated ), Willie Mays is arguably the greatest player in baseball history, still revered for the passion he brought to the game. He began as a teenager in the Negro Leagues, became a cult hero in New York, and was the headliner in Major League Baseball’s bold expansion to California. With 3,283 hits, 660 home runs, and 338 stolen bases, he was a blend of power, speed, and stylistic bravado that enraptured fans for more than two decades. Now, in the first biography authorized by and written with the cooperation of Willie Mays, James Hirsch reveals the man behind the player. Willie is perhaps best known for "The Catch" — his breathtaking over-the-shoulder grab in the 1954 World Series. But he was a transcendent figure who received standing ovations in enemy stadiums and who, during the turbulent civil rights era, urged understanding and reconciliation. More than his records, his legacy is defined by the pure joy that he brought to fans and the loving memories that have been passed to future generations so they might know the magic and beauty of the game. With meticulous research, and drawing on interviews with Mays himself as well as with close friends, family, and teammates, Hirsch presents a complex portrait of one of America’s most significant cultural icons. |

1951 $156.47 Fifty years have now passed, yet it remains a baseball moment frozen for eternity. New York Giants slugger Bobby Thomson will seemingly always be a 27-year-old ballplayer in his prime, blasting a home run against the archrival Brooklyn Dodgers to vault his team into the World Series against the neighboring New York Yankees. Servicemen and servicewomen stationed in Korea were able to share in the moment via radio, helping to make it famous as the shot heard ’round the world. It was the biggest baseball highlight in a year in which the game witnessed many significant moments and stories. Future superstars Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle would make their debuts with their respective New York teams early in the 1951 season, just as legendary Yankee hero Joe DiMaggio was embarking on his final big-league campaign. Baseball commissioner Albert Happy Chandler was being ousted from office, just as maverick owner Bill Veeck was bringing his entertaining antics back into the game as the new owner of the St. Louis Browns. All-time great hurler Bob Feller was tying a record for career no-hitters, while Yankee pitcher Allie Reynolds was tying a record for no-hitters in a single season. As baseball celebrates significant milestones in 2001 — the American League’s 100th anniversary and the National League’s 125th — there will be much reflecting on the game’s glorious past. What better time to roll the clock back 50 years to 1951 and relive one of baseball’s most noteworthy seasons, 1951: When Giants Played the Game. |

Baseball Eccentrics $44.71 If you’re looking for someone to write the book on the greatest hitters of all time, you want a Stan Musial, a Hank Aaron, or a Willie Mays. If you want a book on baseball eccentrics, you need look no further than Bill Spaceman Lee. His qualifications are impeccable: Lee is to quirkiness what Picasso was to painting and what Pavarotti is to tenors. In Baseball Eccentrics, the Spaceman has rounded up the most outrageous group of malcontents, characters, rebels, nut jobs, reprobates, wing-nuts, wackos, space cadets, head cases, goofs, free thinkers, and oddballs who ever livened up the grand old game. Not only does he describe their most bizarre antics in often-hilarious detail, but he offers his own unique thoughts on their particular genre of eccentricity. Lee has included them all: Dizzy, Daffy, Ducky, Dazzy, Yogi, Casey, a whole ward of Lefties, and an entire flock of Birdies, Birds, and Hawks. There are also Mad Hungarians, spies who can speak seven languages (but can’t hit in any of them), philosophers, and relief pitchers who drop their pants and sit on birthday cakes. So sit back and let your mind wander to the days when baseball was much more than a business, a time when baseball was fun and players treated it as a game. Baseball is more than dry statistics and record books. It is a living, breathing reflection of America–warts, oddities, and all. |

Beyond the Boys of Summer $2.66 Spanning half a century, the first comprehensive anthology of sliders with social history, writings from the legendary sportswriter Roger Kahn This is my nineteenth book; all my life I’ve tried to write literature. I am aware that like Stan Musial or Ted Williams at the bat most of the time I’ve failed. But the critical word is ‘try.’ That effort has been a wonder of my life. –Roger Kahn, from the Prologue Roger Kahn is the best of all with his sweet ear for the cadence of baseball talk. –Donald Hall, New York Times Book ReviewFrom the beginning of his career, as a young man reporting on sports for the New York Herald Tribune, Roger Kahn labored to create literature. Most famous for his modern classic, The Boys of Summer–hailed by James Michener as the finest American book on sports –Kahn is the author of eighteen books and the only baseball writer to have had three titles on the New York Times bestseller list. While he is best known for his sweet ear for America’s national pastime, Kahn did not limit himself to baseball. With his literary style of reportage, he explored the depths of basketball and boxing, Judaism and McCarthyism, and even poetry in an unforgettable interview with one of his heroes, Robert Frost. For the first time, Beyond the Boys of Summer presents a showcase of fifty years’ worth of Kahn’s celebrated work. Uniquely organized around life’s stages–from youth to old age–the bookbrings you face-to-face with some of the greatest names in sports, including Muhammad Ali, Jack Dempsey, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Willie Mays, and Pete Rose. Beyond sports, Kahn takes you back to the tumultuous days of 1968 to witness the violent protest of a student rebellion. He brings you to |

Cooperstown: A Novel By Eugena Pilek $22.95 An exceptional debut novel lovingly probes the values of faith, family, community, and America’s favorite pastime, baseball — from a captivating new voice in contemporary fiction.
Cooperstown, New York, in 1979 (the year Willie Mays was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame), is a close-knit community where gossip is sovereign and baseball is the great American religion. Seen through the eyes of Dr. Kerwin Chylak, a psychiatrist who has recently moved to town with his family, the citizens of Cooperstown are a wildly eclectic team of players that includes an alcohol-befuddled mayor determined to be more than a footnote to history; the town busybody who pitches missiles of miscommunication; a disillusioned ex-ball player turned warrior; and a sports writer who detests baseball. Little do these ordinary people know that they are about to be thrust into an extraordinary situation as the construction of a baseball theme park threatens their quaint way of life. Teetering on the cusp of a decade in which commercialism could swallow them whole, they are spurred to action — with unexpected, poignant, often hilarious results.
Full of baseball legend and lore and featuring an unforgettable cast of unconventional characters, Cooperstown probes the hearts and minds of small-town America. It is a celebration of life in all its struggles, sorrows, and sudden slides into victory. |

Eric Davis Signed Cincinnati Reds Jersey $176.99 When Eric Davis first appeared in 1984, his physical talents gave him the potential to be one of the most exciting players in the game. He was a rare five-tool player with home run power as well as sheer speed on the basepaths. He made a habit of robbing home runs and elicited comparisons to Willie Mays. Davis showed what he could do in 1986 hitting .277 with 27 homers and stealing 80 bases. He built on that success by hitting .293 with 37 homers and 50 steals in 1987, despite playing in only 129 games. From 1986 to 1990, he averaged 30 home runs and 40 steals. During this time he was one of the game’s most exciting players and a very visible superstar player. Eric Davis has hand signed this Cincinnati Reds jersey. All RSF Memorabilia items come with a certificate of authenticity hologram. |

Fall Classics $8.83 From The Publisher:Long before there was the Super Bowl, the NBA Championship, the Final Four, or the World Cup, there was the World Series. In the beginning, men in derbies sat in the outfield and marveled at Mathewson and McGraw. Today, fans congregate in sports bars, staring at screens big enough to see which players have shaved that day.For a century, the World Series has captured the nation’s imagination. The drama has included Willie Mays’s catch, of course, and Reggie Jackson’s home runs, and the gratifying day when Walter Johnson finally won. But the plot lines have also featured the audacious fixing of the 1919 Series and the unlikely heroics of various journeymen never much heard of before the span of a few brilliant autumn days, and never much heard of since. There has been one perfect game. There have been any number of perfectly inexplicable managerial decisions, not all of them made by managers of the Red Sox. There has been drama, comedy, and pathos.Fall Classics is a collection of the best writing about the World Series in its first hundred years. Certainly it is a kind of history of the event. It is also a catalog of the work of some of the most accomplished and entertaining writers of the past century, since the World Series has drawn to itself not only our best sports scribblers, but many writers who wouldn’t have dreamed of writing about the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Final Four, or even the Super Bowl. Here you’ll find Jimmy Breslin telling Damon Runyon’s fantastic story of how he got the scoop on where Grover Cleveland Alexander spent the first innings of a seventh game he eventually won. (Hint: It wasn’t the bullpen.) Satchel Paige recalls his experience of finally getting to pitch in the Series in 1948. Red Smith writes about Willie Mays’s last hurrah with the Mets in 1973 against the A’s. And Peter Gammons and Roger Angell give their takes on the two most famous game sixes of all, Gammons on 1975 and Angell on 1986. |

Few and Chosen $6.3 He hit the most famous home run in baseball history for the New York Giants, the Shot Heard ’round the World, in the third game of the 1951 playoff against the Brooklyn Dodgers. Many have called it baseball’s single greatest moment. With one swing on a gray October afternoon almost 60 years ago, Bobby Thomson etched his name in baseball lore forever and proved he is a man who can deliver when the chips are down. And now Bobby Thomson delivers again in the clutch. In his new book, Few and Chosen: Defining Giants Greatness Across the Eras, Thomson selects his all-time Giants team, five players at each position plus the top five managers, covering the team’s more than 100-year history in two cities, New York and San Francisco, on two coasts. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, raised on New York’s Staten Island, Thomson has been following Giants baseball as man and boy for more than 70 years and is eminently qualified for so daunting a task. As a boy, he saw Bill Terry and Carl Hubbell. As a man, he played for managers Mel Ott and Leo Durocher and alongside Willie Mays, Monte Irvin, Ernie Lombardi, Sal Maglie, and Alvin Dark. As a result, no one is better qualified to rate and compare players from different eras playing for one of the most storied franchises in baseball history. |

Ghosts in the Gallery at Cooperstown $64.41 Of the 256 players, managers, and executives in the Hall of Fame, the names we know well – Ty Cobb, Connie Mack, Willie Mays – account for a small minority. But all other members of the Hall of Fame were celebrated in their day, or else by baseball historians in the days since. Yet most fans know little about these men. This book contains biographical and statistical information on 16 Hall of Famers unfamiliar to many fans, including Morgan G. Bulkeley, Candy Cummings, Roger Bresnahan, Jack Chesbro, Jesse Burkett, Kid Nichols, Bobby Wallace, John Clarkson, Elmer Flick, Eppa Rixey, Jake Beckley, Roger Connor, Vic Willis, Willie Wells, Frank Selee, and Bid McPhee. These men, selections of the oft-criticized Veterans Committee, all enjoyed remarkable careers — and were themselves remarkable individuals, as the author discovered. |

Going, Going..Caught! $89.91 Though Willie Mays” World Series catch of Vic Wertz”s long drive in 1954 immediately comes to mind, there are many catches that have been called the greatest. This work documents baseball”s best catches by outfielders from 1887 through 1964 (the year of Duke Snider”s retirement, the demolition of the Polo Grounds, and, arguably, Willie Mays” last great grab). After introductory chapters on factors that influenced the catches and their legacies–from ballpark quirks, changes to the baseball and the evolution of baseball gloves, to sportswriters and photography–the book describes famous catches by decade. Extensive research yields a wealth of information for each catch, including commentary by period sportswriters, players, and, often, the man who snagged the ball. |
