Sb-600 off camera — how do I make the on camera flash not fire?

Okay so I am just getting into off camera flash photography. I have an sb-600 and I figured out how to make it fire off camera, using my on camera flash as a commander but I dont know how to get the on camera flash to NOT fire. I only want the sb-600 to. In the custom settings menu – bracketing/flash – flash cntrl for bulit-in-flash – commander mode I put the two dashes (–) for the built in flash part and ttl for group A. I thought the two dashes were supposed to make the on camera flash not fire. can anyone help? how do i make it so the on camera flash doesnt fire?

The on camera flash always fires – that’s how it communicates with the wireless flash. It will just fire imperceptably before the shutter opens.Otherwise, (at least in my D90,) you can set the on -camera flash to be TTL, off, or manual.
