Collector’s Items [Bonus Tracks] $14.98 The tracks on Collector’s Items may well be what the title claims, but they aren’t exactly rarities, and all have been issued several times, originally portioned out as the Prestige LPs called Collectors’ Items (the original featured seven of the dozen sides found in this reissue) and Conception and as Blue Moods, issued on the Debut Records label. The four sessions these LPs covered spanned the years 1951 to 1956 and show a Miles Davis gradually discovering his mature sound and tone. The first four tracks were recorded in 1953 and feature a rare glimpse of Charlie Parker (Davis’ first boss) playing tenor saxophone rather than alto in tandem with tenor saxist Sonny Rollins, and with Walter Bishop on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and the steady Philly Joe Jones on drums. The next three cuts are from a 1956 session with Rollins on tenor sax, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Arthur Taylor on drums. Track eight, “Conception,” was recorded in 1951 and pairs Rollins’ tenor with Jackie McLean’s alto sax and features Bishop again on piano, Tommy Potter on bass, and a young Art Blakey on drums. The final four tracks were cut in July of 1955 with Charles Mingus on bass, Britt Woodman on trombone, Teddy Charles on vibes, and another young drummer of note, Elvin Jones. Given the differing personnel and dates, it’s fairly remarkable that the resulting CD actually has the arc of coherence to it, and features a strong version of “‘Round Midnight,” a sturdy, rollicking “Compulsion,” just a hint of Davis’ muted, mature tone on “Vierd Blues,” and a wonderfully atmospheric and hushed “Nature Boy,” given balance and feel by Teddy Charles’ wonderful work on vibes and Davis knowing exactly what to do with that, turning out marvelously sympathetic trumpet lines, working in that deep, stripped down, and emotionally meditative tone that would come to be his trademark. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi |

Daddy’s Home $7.98 What separates Shep & the Limelites from the countless other doo wop vocal groups of the 1950s and early ’60s is the distinctive singing and songwriting of James Sheppard. Sheppard, aside from his amazingly expressive, Sam Cooke-like singing voice, was adept at writing detailed romantic ballads that were a step or two above the norm, and what’s more, he had a tendency to link them together through subtle references in the lyrics, so that, in a sense, his songs with the Heartbeats and the Limelites formed a long, interlocking story of departures and returns. The story, as it were, really starts with the Heartbeats’ 1956 single “A Thousand Miles Away,” and following the collapse of that group, Sheppard formed the Limelites in 1961, and released “Daddy’s Home,” which picks up where “Miles” left off, even including a last line that croons “I’m not a thousand miles away,” all supported by a poignant (but half-buried) sax line. This brief collection includes “Daddy’s Home,” another sequel, “What Did Daddy Do,” the elegant “Gee Baby, What About You,” the rocking “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright,” and other sides from the group’s stay at Hull Records. Given the interlocking nature of Sheppard’s writing, however, listeners should really pick up either Westside’s Daddy’s Home to Stay or Collectables’ Daddy’s Home: The Very Best of Shep & the Limelites, both of which are double-disc sets, as well as a Heartbeats compilation, in order to really see the whole picture. Destiny $13.98 This second solo disc from the Rascals’ Felix Cavaliere, 1975′s Destiny, has that familiar voice wrapped up in jazz-tinged disco. It’s a top-notch effort which is more musical than it was commercial and is a natural extension of Island of Real, the last Rascals album, featuring some of the players who performed on that 1972 finale. The title track has Cavaliere sounding a bit like Marty Balin of the Jefferson Airplane, and the song is first rate, despite its disco leanings. “Flip Flop” has superb guitars from Steve Kahn and Howard “Buzz” Feiten, while Feiten’s horn arrangement is executed with style by Michael Brecker on tenor sax and David Sanborn on alto sax. The surprise appearance by Rascals drummer Dino Danelli is just frosting on the cake for this theme, which comes by way of Lou Christie’s “The Gypsy Cried.” “Never Felt Love Before” brings Cavaliere into Motown territory, and the instrumentation resembles the Isley Brothers “This Old Heart of Mine,” while “You Came and Set Me Free” has flavors from Tavares’ Top Ten 1975 hit “It Only Takes a Minute Girl.” If Cavaliere was taking the Rascals into jazz territory on their final discs, he veers off deeper into soul and R&B-pop here. The Bobby Hebb line “Like a natural man” Cavaliere sings at the end of “You Came and Set Me Free” before going into “Love Came” — and all these references to soul records throughout Destiny — are hardly coincidence. Hebb released Love Games a few years before Cavaliere’s Destiny, and the two albums have much in common — both are highly sophisticated adult soul-pop recordings and both failed to reach the audiences that deserved to hear them. Laura Nyro was produced by Felix Cavaliere, and her performance on backing vocals for “Love Came” is a treat. Nyro’s not the only name guest star either — Leslie West came from the same scene as Cavaliere when his Vagrants emerged around the time of the Young Rascals.
