’89 Live in Japan $9.99 Sometime in 1992/1993 a revamped Quiet Riot featuring vocalist Kevin DuBrow with Bob Rondinelli on drums (around this time Rondinelli had also filled in on an Aerosmith gig one night when Joey Kramer wasn’t available — call him Mr. Fill-In) performed at a little-known club in Billerica, Massachusetts called Mr. Tipps. It is one of those suburban gigs we call “the last rung on the rock & roll ladder” and it’s a pity because Quiet Riot had more than just a clever name, and more than the cachet of being the professional birthplace of guitar wizard Randy Rhodes. To those who don’t know the story, DuBrow faced a mutiny by the band he founded and Pasha Records released an album in 1988 with two different members, titling the disc, interestingly enough, after the first Japanese release by the original group. This DVD, ’89 Live in Japan, comes from that strange lineup in between and features vocalist Paul Shortino of the group Rough Cutt as well as bassist Sean McNabb and an uncredited Jimmy Waldo — keyboard player from the groups New England and Alcatraz. Why Waldo is treated like a hired hand is one of those unique situations which seemed to develop after Flo & Eddie called Mountain’s organ player Steve Knight “the most useless man in rock & roll.” The statement was far from accurate, of course, but it was humorous and Mott the Hoople and Aerosmith would both push keyboardists to the side and pretty much off-stage after that infamous quip. Though the 1988 self-titled Quiet Riot album faced horrible reviews and little or no commercial acceptance, this DVD is actually quite enjoyable. As a live band, Q.R. had that long-hair-’80s-thing down pat. Where previous efforts were fully automatic hot LZs, they were also slightly muddled for the very same reason. They fired in all directions. With Ashes, producer Machine has sharpened the corner of every riff and tightened the turns on classicist metal gallops. Best of all, Randy Blythe’s furious yawp is more focused. Rather than simply being another scary voice shouter, Blythe becomes Lamb of God’s threshold of pain conduit. “Laid to Rest” begins with his measured statements — “If there was a single day I could live…I’d trade all the others away” — flanked by the at-odds guitars of Willie Adler and Mark Morton. But then Blythe unleashes his demonic throat, and the guitars leap over and across one another like basilisks on a prowl for ibex kids. “Hourglass” offers more, its interlocking rhythms and breakdowns harking to the dark lands of Scandinavia. But it doesn’t go all the way there. This is American metal, after all, meaning that, in the tradition of Pantera and Poison the Well, large-form grandiosity is sacrificed in favor of a muscularity derived from hardcore and hard living. Among them were some Bobby Bare cuts: “Passing Through,” “Shut Your Face, I’m Talking to Your Head,” “Before You Die,” and “Take Me Home to Mama.” In the same year there was the song that Ralph Stanley would make his signature, Waylon Jennings’ “Man of Constant Sorrow.” In 1967 it was Bob Dylan’s “Girl from the North Country,” and in 1968 it was Dylan’s “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35,” produced by Bob Johnston, Dylan’s producer. And in 1969, amid the ringing electric guitars of Randy Scruggs, Charlie McCoy’s harmonica, Charlie Daniels’ rhythm guitar, and others bluegrass “innovations,” it was over. Arguably the most famous duo in the history of bluegrass — eclipsing even the profile of the music’s founders, Bill Monroe (their former employer) and Ralph Stanley in the early ’60s — Flatt & Scruggs had a bitter parting of ways that would not be mended until Flatt was on his deathbed ten years later.
