Horace Greeley $40 From his arrival in New York City in 1831 as a young printer from New Hampshire to his death in 1872 after losing the presidential election to General Ulysses S. Grant, Horace Greeley (b. 1811) was a quintessential New Yorker. He thrived on the city’s ceaseless energy, with his New York Tribune at the forefront of a national revolution in reporting and transmitting news. Greeley devoured ideas, books, fads, and current events as quickly as he developed his own interests and causes, all of which revolved around the concept of freedom. While he adored his work as a New York editor, Greeley’s lifelong quest for universal freedom took him to the edge of the American frontier and beyond to Europe. A major figure in nineteenth-century American politics and reform movements, Greeley was also a key actor in a worldwide debate about the meaning of freedom that involved progressive thinkers on both sides of the Atlantic, including Margaret Fuller, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Karl Marx. Greeley was first and foremost an ardent nationalist who devoted his life to ensuring that America live up to its promises of liberty and freedom for all of its members. Robert C. Williams places Greeley’s relentless political ambitions, bold reform agenda, and complex personal life into the broader context of freedom. Horace Greeley is as rigorous and vast as Greeley himself, and as America itself in the long nineteenth century. In the first comprehensive biography of Greeley to be published in nearly half a century, Williams captures Greeley from all sides: editor, reformer, political candidate, eccentric, and trans-Atlantic public intellectual; examining headlining news issues of the day, including slavery, westward expansion, European revolutions, the Civil War, the demise of the Whig and the birth of the Republican parties, transcendentalism, and other intellectual currents of the era. |

Grant $22 “Ulysses S. Grant was the first four-star general in the history of the United States Army and the only president between Andrew Jackson and Woodrow Wilson to serve eight consecutive years in the White House. As general in chief, Grant revolutionized modern warfare. As president, he brought stability to the country after years of war and upheaval. Yet today Grant is remembered as a brilliant general but a failed president.>In this comprehensive biography, Jean Edward Smith reconciles these conflicting assessments of Grant’s life. He argues convincingly that Grant is greatly underrated as a president. Following the turmoil of Andrew Johnson’s administration, Grant guided the nation through the post-Civil War era, overseeing Reconstruction in the South and enforcing the freedoms of new African-American citizens. His presidential accomplishments were as considerable as his military victories, says Smith, for the same strength of character that made him successful on the battlefield also characterized his years in the White House.” |

Horace Afoot $4.99 A wealthy, erudite, middle-aged loner in search of anonymity settles in the aptly named midwestern town of Oblivion and is swiftly drawn into the town's persistent local mysteries in this idiosyncratic, rather beguiling debut novel. The newcomer is, by any standards, peculiar: He repeatedly changes his name, adopting names of writers he particularly admires, among them William Blake and, most memorably, Quintus Horatius Flaccus (the Roman poet Horace). And in a place where everyone drives, he walks. It's while he's doing so, hiking into the country to visit an old Indian mound, that he becomes inextricably tangled in the town's affairs. A young woman, naked and bleeding, stumbles out of a cornfield and collapses. Horace becomes a prime suspect in her assault, until Sylvia, the young woman, regains consciousness and clears him. She refuses to name her attacker, though, and the police (who harbor some nasty secrets of their own) keep a wary eye on Horace. They become even more suspicious when he's drawn into the violent, messy world Sylvia (a self-destructive, small-time drug dealer) inhabits. And then her callow boyfriend, infuriated by her affection for Horace, begins to follow and harass the newcomer. Horace, against his better judgment, finds himself promising to help Sylvia escape from Oblivion. In doing so, he stumbles across some of the town's unpalatable secrets, putting his life itself at risk. Reuss, in a spare, precise prose, does a deft job of catching, without overdoing, the quirks, obsessions, and longings of his characters. And he effectively renders the unsettling (and misleading) calm of Oblivion, a town frantic to deny or suppress life's unpredictability. Horace, however, is a bit wearing–too skittish, too stubbornly incapable of change–to be very appealing. Still, his voice lingers, as do many of the scenes in this terse, moving exploration of modern anomie and the longing for–and fear of- -intimacy. |

The bawdy, farcical plot revolves around Horace’s crusade for justice and eventual campaign for president, intertwined with the gossipy doings at his twin sister Hortense’s Florida trailer park. The eponymous Horace is a pompous, offensive boor who wears loud ties and has hair sprouting from his ears and who we come to love because he unerringly points out that the emperor has no clothes. The book closes with a transcendent, almost prayerful sequence of surprising sweetness that reveals the inner longings of each of the unlikely characters. Thus, Horace Bixby joins the ranks of other classic American picaresque novels think Tom Robbins meets Kurt Vonnegut, with the blessing of Samuel Clemens. Horace Bixby is the creation of R.F. Seabury, who not only looks remarkably like Mark Twain, but who shares Twain’s gift for unvarnished Americana and for political satire with heart. A magnetic raconteur, R.F. Seabury is a true American "character" himself, with a resonant voice and an infectious laugh an interviewer’s dream. After his formal education ended with the ninth grade, he spent the years that followed as a Green Beret, country storeowner, scrap metal dealer, trucker, boat builder, and commercial fisherman. He currently owns and operates a bamboo farm in Sarasota, Florida, where he has lived for the past seven years in a sixteen-foot Airstream Bambi. |

Poetic Interplay: Catullus and Horace $33.19 The lives of Catullus and Horace overlap by a dozen years in the first century BC. Yet though they are the undisputed masters of the lyric voice in Roman poetry Horace directly mentions his great predecessor Catullus only once and this reference has often been taken as mocking. In fact Horace’s allusion far from disparaging Catullus pays him a discreet compliment by suggesting the challenge that his accomplishment presented to his successors including Horace himself. In Poetic Interplay the first book-length study of Catullus’s influence on Horace Michael Putnam shows that the earlier poet was probably the single most important source of inspiration for Horace’s Odes the later author’s magnum opus. Except in some half-dozen poems Catullus is not technically writing lyric because his favored meters do not fall into that category. Nonetheless however disparate their preferred genres and their stylistic usage Horace found in the poetry of Catullus whatever its mode of presentation a constant stimulus for his imagination. And despite the differences between the two poets Putnam’s close readings reveal that many of Horace’s poems echo Catullus verbally thematically or both. By illustrating how Horace often found his own voice even as he acknowledged Catullus’s genius Putnam guides us to a deeper appreciation of the earlier poet as well. |

A Commentary on Horace $65 This Commentary takes critical account of recent writing on the Odes. It deals with detailed questions of interpretation, and shows how Horace combined the tact of a court-poet with a humane individualism, and how he wrote within a literary tradition without losing a highly personal voice. Though the book is not intended for beginners, the editors aim throughout at clarity. – ;This book is a successor to the commentaries by Nisbet and Hubbard on Odes I and II, but it takes critical note of the abundant recent writing on Horace. It starts from the precise interpretation of the Latin; attention is paid to the nuances implied by the word-order; parallel passages are quoted, not to depreciate the poet's originality but to elucidate his meaning and to show how he adapted his predecessors; sometimes major English poets are cited to exemplify his influence on. the tradition. In expounding the so-called Roman Odes the editors reject not only uncritical acceptance of Augustan ideology but also more recent attempts to find subversion in a court-poet. They show how Greek moralizing, particularly by the Epicureans, is applied to contemporary social situations. Poems on country festivals are treated sympathetically in the belief that the tolerant and inclusive religion of the Romans can easily be misunderstood. The poet's wit is emphasized in his addresses both to. eminent Romans and to women with Greek names; the latter poems are taken as reflecting his general experience rather than particular occasions. Though Horace's ironic self-presentation must not be understood too literally, the editors reject the modern tendency to treat the author as unknowable. Although the text of the Odes is not printed separately, the headings to the notes provide a continuous text. The editors put forward a number of conjectures, most of them necessarily tentative, and in the few cases where they disagree, both opinions are summarized. – ;Latinists have been waiting for this for almost thirty years … Anyone who loves Latin will relish A Commentary on Horace: Odes Book III. It has, after all, been worth the wait. – Denis Feeney, Times Literary Supplement; The strengths of Nisbet and Rudd's new commentary are very great, and are a function of the extraordinary attention to detail throughout. Its sheer utility value is very high. This volume will be a stimulus for thought and a treasure-house to plunder for as far ahead as one can imagine Latin being studied in universities. – Denis Feeney, Times Literary Supplement;Even if we must face the fact that we will never have a commentary on the fourth book from Nisbet's hand, we shall be forever grateful that Rudd was able to make possible the appearance of this volume, a cap to their distinguished careers, and a monument that will endure beside the other two. – Denis Feeney, Times Literary Supplement |

JOHN STARKS CLOSE UP DUNK 8X10 $127.68 I’ve seen some players come and go who had more talent, but they didn’t play as hard, they didn’t work as hard and they didn’t care as much as John does, Dave Checketts, former president of the New York Knicks, once said of John Starks. Starks, who spent eight years as a point guard with the Knicks and helped lead them to the Eastern Conference Championship in 1994, was one of those guys who electrified Madison Square Garden, whether it was by shooting a clutch three-pointer or dunking over Michael Jordan. John Starks has hand signed this 8×10 photograph of him in action, making his famous shot called The Dunk, during the ’92-’93 playoffs against the hated Chicago Bulls. With this dunk over Horace Grant and Michael Jordan, the Knicks defeated the defending champions. A Steiner Sports Certificate of Authenticity is included. Steiner Sports entered the sports business world in 1987, and over the past decade Steiner Sports has established themselves as a leading provider of sports marketing services and authentic memorabilia.
