Hockey Series

Which is a Bigger Canadian Hockey moment: 1972 Summit Series or 2010 Olympics?
Great question. I would have to say the 1972 Summit Series. I was a young man in 1972 and remember vividly the entire country holding it’s collective breath during that series. Especially after the Soviets had beaten us so badly here in Canada. The last three games in Moscow were amazing and brought the country together like it had never been before nor since. For game 8 schools were closed, airlines delayed flights businesses shut down early televisions were on virtually everywhere that had an outlet to plug one into. The entire nation watched with baited breath.
Olympic victories in Salt Lake and Vancouver as well as Canada Cups and other international competitions were great but nothing (IMHO) can ever match up to the 72 summit series.
Having said all of that I think the best hockey game that I have ever watched was Montreal/Red Army on Dec 31st 1975. The game ended in a 3-3 draw. As close to perfect hockey as one could ever see.

Sports Illustrated Hockey Talk $11.99 From the leader in sports writing comes a collection of stories that examine just about every aspect of the game: the players, the league and what it means to the fans. For true hockey fans, there is no sport as great, as fast, as competitive, or as important as their beloved hockey game. The teams, the organizations, and the players are a part of their family and Saturday night is better known as hockey night. As children, we hockey fans would wake at 6am, jump into the back of a cold station wagon and head off with Dad or Mom at the wheel to our hockey games. Sleep deprived, cold and tired – it didn’t matter how low we felt because as soon as those skates were laced, it was game-on! We traded the cards, we followed the players, and we watched as our team fought through the regular season to earn their rightful place in the post season. There is nothing like the feeling of seeing your team go all the way, seeing them hoist that cherished Cup that Lord Stanley so kindly gifted to the Dominion of Canada, seeing the tears in the eyes of these grown men, these ice warriors. We love this game of ours, and we can’t get enough, so thank you Sports Illustrated for bringing us more. In this book, Sports Illustrated ‘s most prolific hockey writers give us the honest goods on hockey. They tell us about the players, the infractions, the best series, the most contentious of battles and the most glorious of victories. This is hockey in its truest form. This is hockey writing for hockey lovers and with an array of Sports Illustrated photos throw in for added benefit. This is just about the best damn book available on hockey, anywhere, period. From the Trade Paperback edition. |

Czechoslovak Hockey Riots $71.7 The Czechoslovak Hockey Riots were a short lived series of protests, mildly violent on occasion, that took place in response to the 1969 World Ice Hockey Championships. After Soviet invasion into Czechoslovakia political ideals of Prague Spring were slowly but steadily replaced by politics of accommodation to demands of Soviet Union. People in Czechoslovakia, unable to find other ways to express their opinion, reacted with few very visible but ultimately ineffective manifestations of disagreement. On March 21 and 28, 1969, the Czechoslovak national icehockey team beat the Soviet team in the 1969 World Ice Hockey Championships in Stockholm. Throughout Czechoslovakia, possibly 500,000 fans crowded the streets of their cities to celebrate the wins. In some places, particularly Prague, the celebrations turned to protests against the Soviet military who continued to occupy the country after the Warsaw Pact invasion the previous August. While the majority of these demonstrations were peaceful, some turned violent as protesters attacked Soviet military units. Skating Engineers Hockey at RPI $24.69 Hockey at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) began on a frozen pond in Cohoes in 1902 and has twice reached the pinnacle of the collegiate game. Along the way, championship performances and aweinspiring play have made hockey at RPI an institution. Starting with the nearly forgotten early years and continuing to the present, Skating Engineers: Hockey at RPI follows the course of the sport at Rensselaer, which emerged as a powerhouse a few short years after the program was resurrected following World War II. Highlights include the legendary coach Ned Harkness, who led an underdog team to the national title in 1954; the highscoring early1960s teams that returned to the national stage; the powerful mid1980s squad that won the championship again; and the modern era, in which the women skate on the same historic field house ice as the men.
