Atomic Roooster [Expanded Deluxe Edition] $18.99 This 2004 reissue of the first Atomic Roooster LP bests all prior pressings — domestic and import alike — with flawless digital remastering, the resurrection of the original running order, as well as five significant bonus sides. The trio of Vince Crane (organ/vocals), Carl Palmer (drums), and eventually Nick Graham (vocals/bass) had formed out of the Crazy World of Arthur Brown, where both Crane and Palmer had played key roles on the chart-topping single “Fire.” As the former had been Arthur Brown’s musical director, it is fitting that he penned the vast majority of the Rooster’s initial outing. The songs reflect the author’s darker and at times fatalistic demeanor, most directly in the repetitive “What is the point of going on?” chorus that distinguishes the incongruously delicate folkie and pastoral “Winter,” or the sardonic sexual superiority of “And So to Bed.” These stylistically contrast the forceful “Friday 13th,” “S.L.Y.,” and “Before Tomorrow.” Equally divergent are the horn-driven “Broken Wings” and incendiary jazz fusion workout “Decline and Fall.” The latter is an interesting departure as it provides each musician an opportunity to interact with substantive fluidity. When Elektra Records added Atomic Rooster to its roster, Palmer had already flown the proverbial coop, replaced by Paul Hammond (drums), while John Cann (guitar/vocals) had taken Graham’s place. Such a considerable shift in personnel convinced the band to have Cann record guitar parts overtop of “S.L.Y.” and “Before Tomorrow,” as well as redo the lead vocal for “Friday 13th.” In North America the album was released with a completely different feel, which was undoubtedly as much a result of the reconfigured tune stack as it was the additions and/or subtractions. The 2004 edition of Atomic Roooster includes the U.S. version(s) of all three and two tunes from a rare BBC Radio appearance by the incipient incarnation performing “Friday 13th” and the not-yet-release… |

While disc one is a straight reissue of Awaken the Guardian (it contains the same eight songs in the same order) and disc two consists of both live material and demos, the DVD focuses on a December 28, 1986 show in Long Island NY (where Fates Warning perform a combination of songs from Awaken the Guardian and their two previous albums Night on Brocken and The Spectre Within). Unfortunately, the DVD isn’t a professionally filmed video, but its inclusion is still a good thing because it gives headbangers a rare chance to actually see (as opposed to simply hearing) the band during their John Arch era. Arch’s high-pitched lead vocals are — much like the vocals of Rush’s Geddy Lee — an acquired taste. Some found Arch, like Lee, to be shrill and said the same thing about Ray Alder when he replaced Arch in 1987. But Arch has plenty of admirers, and headbangers who appreciate his piercing wail generally agree that Awaken the Guardian is the best album that Fates Warning recorded during their Arch period (when they had yet to fully express their interest in progressive rock). Christmas Wish [Deluxe Edition] $18.99 In 1980, NRBQ entered the lucrative seasonal music market with the EP Christmas Wish, in which the ever-eccentric combo offered up eight holiday-themed tunes ranging from the respectful and charming (the lovely title tune, which appeared twice) to the wildly off-kilter (“Here Comes Santa Claus” played on a very curious sounding electronic keyboard, and a live recording of “Jingle Bells” as pulled from the “Magic Box” request basket at a 1980 live show). Since then, NRBQ have expanded Christmas Wish to a full LP, bulked out to 19 tracks and growing from less than 12 minutes to over 32. However, bigger isn’t always better, and a lot of the material the Q have plucked from the vaults to fill this out isn’t much to write home about. While the version of Vince Guaraldi’s “Christmas Time Is Here” is that rare recording that won’t make you think of A Charlie Brown Christmas, “Holiday” is a neat Yuletide original from Terry Adams, and Al Anderson’s bah-humbug interpretation of “The Christmas Song” will amuse the less spirited, much of the rest of the disc comes from live recordings with NRBQ and the Whole Wheat Horns stumbling through songs of the season with a deliberate sloppiness that doesn’t amuse much when removed from its original context, or from home recordings that sound decidedly unfinished. Fans of NRBQ have long known to expect something a little off the wall from these guys, and the expanded Christmas Wish sure fits that bill, but from one of America’s most consistently creative bands this hodgepodge is something of a letdown. Continental [Deluxe Edition] [Bonus Tracks] $36.98 The trio Saint Etienne (songwriters/musicians Pete Wiggs and Bob Stanley and vocalist Sarah Cracknell) has been a popular fixture in the British indie dance scene since the release of its debut album Foxbase Alpha in 1992. Combining ’60s-influenced pop and the acid house rhythms of the British club scene, the band has scored with a series of successful European albums and singles. Saint Etienne has also earned critical acclaim and a loyal cult following in America (particularly in dance clubs), though U.S. commercial success has been elusive. Saint Etienne has released a series of strong albums since the early ’90s. Continental is a superb collection of mostly previously released material, and it’s a nice introduction to their solid body of work. Their strong points are the combination of atmospheric (yet accessible) arrangements and Sarah Cracknell’s ’60s girl group cooing. However, her vocals are not derivative or cutesy, instead lending substantial personality to the material. “Burnt Out Car” and “He’s on the Phone” benefit greatly from her performances, mainly because Saint Etienne rarely incorporates obvious pop hooks. Rather, the band relies more on rhythm and personality, making it considerably more complex than the average pop/dance band. Continental’s best track is a house cover of Gary Numan’s “Stormtrooper in Drag” (it previously appeared on a Gary Numan tribute album), which is odd in concept but surprisingly effective. Fortunately, Continental surrounds that tune with equally competent Saint Etienne originals. Any of the group’s studio albums, particularly So Tough and Tiger Bay, will serve as a nice introduction to the band’s music, since the trio’s best albums stand on their own quite nicely. However, various collections of singles, remixes, and rare material have also been released, and Continental is by far one of the best. Highly recommended.
