Absolute Justice by Cauthen, David [Hardcover]

Absolute Justice by Cauthen, David [Hardcover]

$42.52

One persons justice is anothers revenge, is a maxim trial lawyer Penn Roman has heard throughout his professional life. He experiences the awful truth of this adage as he represents prominent surgeon Larry Brownfell who discovers his beautiful wifes adultery with two men and is drawn into a violent maelstrom which ends in a deadly climax. While investigating criminal charges against his client, Penn uncovers criminal conspiracies among people connected with Brownfell. As he defends his client from the dire consequences of a violent temper and thirst for revenge, a shocking chain of crime, including blackmail, fraud, adultery, perjury, and, ultimately murder, is set in motion. Using all of his legal, investigative, and trial skills, Penn fights both in and out of court to keep Brownfell from being convicted of murder. He is sorely tested by an uncooperative and impulsive client, by Brownfells wife and her unscrupulous lawyer, and by others who have a lot to gain by the doctors conviction and who have a different concept of justice. Fate of Justice and Righteousness during David's Reign

Fate of Justice and Righteousness during David’s Reign

$110

This work argues that 2 Sam 8:15–20:26 is a literary unit designed to show how David and his house failed to establish “justice and righteousness” during David’s reign over all Israel. After an introductory chapter and a chapter on critical methodology the rest of the work is a close reading of 2 Sam 8:15–20:26 that pays special attention to narrative ethics. Chapter 3 makes a case for reading 2 Sam 8:15–20:26 as a coherent literary unit reflecting an ethical world-view grounded in kindness and having as its main theme “the failure of justice and righteousness to be established during David’s reign.” Chapter 4 presents a case for reading 2 Sam 8:15–10:19 as an account of the beginnings of justice and righteousness during David’s reign in which David’s kindness towards Mephibosheth is presented as analogous to a Mesopotamian royal declaration and was performed as an inaugural act of charity upon David’s ascent to the throne.

David Armstrong a preeminent criminal trial attorney from New York City volunteers to defend a tribal policeman on an Indian reservation accused of the torture-murder of a Mexican drug smuggler who killed the policeman’s parents and raped and killed his fifteen year old sister. The policeman shot the smuggler in the stomach then took him into the desert to tie his wrists and ankles to stakes and leave him to be eaten alive by wild animals. On David’s first visit with the policeman he asks him if he has any regrets for what he did to the smuggler. The policeman says "Not really. In fact I now wish I’d also skinned the son-of-a-bitch alive.

A Biblical View of Law and Justice

A Biblical View of Law and Justice

$39.99

“The Bible is not written as a handbook for lawyers, politicians and civil servants setting out a theology of human law. Its concern is the dealings of God with human beings and of human beings with God. What then does the Bible have to say about human laws and legal systems? Looking back to the Old Testament, to the Mosaic Law, the biblical model of kingship and the prophetic call to justice, barrister David McIlroy presents a Christian perspective on the biblical view of law and justice. He also examines the claims and teachings of Christ as King, specifically contrasting these with Caesar, a king of the world. The book then concludes with a reflection on the place of human laws in the light of the Last Judgment. A Biblical View of Law and Justice seeks to wrestle with the biblical message of justice, giving Christian lawyers, civil servants and politicians a renewed vision and understanding of the potential of their work in the post-Christendom world.”

The Story of David DVD] 043396271999

$6.49

Filmed in Israel and Spain, the four hour made for TV The Story of David stars Timothy Bottoms as the Biblical king. The “David and Goliath” legend is presented as credibly as possible, while David’s later disastrous romance with Bathsheba Jane Seymour is handled with taste and decorum. Also in the cast are Anthony Quayle as King Saul, and Terence Hardiman as Bathsheba’s unfortunate warrior husband Uriah. Ernest Kinoy’s teleplay does justice to the Biblical text, without lapsing into wearisome “thees”, “thous” and other such archaic dialogue. The Story of David premiered in two parts on April 9 and 11, 1976.

Fifty years after President Dwight D. Eisenhower ordered troops to Little Rock, Arkansas, to enforce a federal court order desegregating the city’s Central High School, a leading authority on Eisenhower presents an original and engrossing narrative that places Ike and his civil rights policies in dramatically new light. Historians such as Stephen Ambrose and Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., have portrayed Eisenhower as aloof, if not outwardly hostile, to the plight of African-Americans in the 1950s. It is still widely assumed that he opposed the Supreme Court’s landmark 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision mandating the desegregation of public schools, that he deeply regretted appointing Earl Warren as the Court’s chief justice because of his role in molding Brown, that he was a bystander in Congress’s passage of the civil rights acts of 1957 and 1960, and that he so mishandled the Little Rock crisis that he was forced to dispatch troops to rescue a failed policy. In this sweeping narrative, David A. Nichols demonstrates that these assumptions are wrong. Drawing on archival documents neglected by biographers and scholars, including thousands of pages newly available from the Eisenhower Presidential Library, Nichols takes us inside the Oval Office to look over Ike’s shoulder as he worked behind the scenes, prior to Brown, to desegregate the District of Columbia and complete the desegregation of the armed forces. We watch as Eisenhower, assisted by his close collaborator, Attorney General Herbert Brownell, Jr., sifted through candidates for federal judgeships and appointed five pro-civil rights justices to the Supreme Court and progressive judges to lower courts. We witness Eisenhower crafting civil rights legislation, deftly building a congressional coalition that passed the first civil rights act in eighty-two years, and maneuvering to avoid a showdown with Orval Faubus, the governor of Arkansas, over desegregation of Little Rock’s Central High. Nichols demonstrates that Eisenhower, though he was a product of his time and its backward racial attitudes, was actually more progressive on civil rights in the 1950s than his predecessor, Harry Truman, and his successors, John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson. Eisenhower was more a man of deeds than of words and preferred quiet action over grandstanding. His cautious public rhetoric — especially his legalistic response to Brown — gave a misleading impression that he was not committed to the cause of civil rights. In fact, Eisenhower’s actions laid the legal and political groundwork for the more familiar breakthroughs in civil rights achieved in the 1960s. Fair, judicious, and exhaustively researched, A Matter of Justice is the definitive book on Eisenhower’s civil rights policies that every presidential historian and future biographer of Ike will have to contend with.

In this major study of the causes of war, David Welch argues that, contrary to the received wisdom in academic and policy circles, states are often motivated by sincere concern for the perceived demands of justice, not merely by self interest. By examining the outbreak of five Great Power wars (the Crimean War, the FrancoPrussian War, World War I, World War II, and the Falklands War), Welch demonstrates the importance of the justice motive in state behavior, using both historical and philosophical analysis to shed new light on an old problem. Comparative Criminal Justice

Comparative Criminal Justice

The increasingly important topic of comparative criminal justice is examined from an original and insightful perspective by David Nelken, one of the top scholars in the field. The author looks at why we should study crime and criminal justice in a comparative and international context, and the difficulties we encounter when we do. Drawing on experience of teaching and research in a variety of countries, the author offers multiple illustrations of striking differences in the roles of criminal justice actors and ways of handling crime problems. The book includes in-depth discussions of such key issues as how we can learn from other jurisdictions, compare 'like with like', and balance explanation with understanding for example, in making sense of national differences in prison rates. Careful attention is given to the question of how far globalisation challenges traditional ways of comparing units. The book also offers a number of helpful tips on methodology, showing why method and substance cannot and should not be separated when it comes to understanding other people's systems of justice. Students and academics in criminology and criminal justice will find this book an invaluable resource.

Seeking Spatial Justice

Seeking Spatial Justice

$75

In 1996, the Los Angeles Bus Riders Union, a grassroots advocacy organization, won a historic legal victory against the city’s Metropolitan Transit Authority. The resulting consent decree forced the MTA for a period of ten years to essentially reorient the mass transit system to better serve the city’s poorest residents. A stunning reversal of conventional governance and planning in urban America, which almost always favors wealthier residents, this decision is also, for renowned urban theorist Edward W. Soja, a concrete example of spatial justice in action. In Seeking Spatial Justice , Soja argues that justice has a geography and that the equitable distribution of resources, services, and access is a basic human right. Building on current concerns in critical geography and the new spatial consciousness, Soja interweaves theory and practice, offering new ways of understanding and changing the unjust geographies in which we live. After tracing the evolution of spatial justice and the closely related notion of the right to the city in the influential work of Henri Lefebvre, David Harvey, and others, he demonstrates how these ideas are now being applied through a series of case studies in Los Angeles, the city at the forefront of this movement. Soja focuses on such innovative labor–community coalitions as Justice for Janitors, the Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy, and the Right to the City Alliance; on struggles for rent control and environmental justice; and on the role that faculty and students in the UCLA Department of Urban Planning have played in both developing the theory of spatial justice and putting it into practice.Effectively locating spatial justice as a theoretical concept, a mode of empirical analysis, and a strategy for social and political action, this book makes a significant contribution to the contemporary debates about justice, space, and the city.

Administrative Justice in the 21st Century

Administrative Justice in the 21st Century

$247.2

The idea of administrative justice is central to the British system of public law, more embracing than judicial review, or even administrative law itself. It embraces all the mechanisms designed to achieve a proper balance between the exercise of public and quasi-public power and those affected by the exercise of that power. This book contains revised versions of the papers given at the International Conference on Administrative Justice held in Bristol in 1997. Forty years after the publication of the Franks Committee report on Tribunals and Inquiries, the conference reflected on developments since then and sought to provoke debate about how the future might unfold. Participants included policy makers, tribunal chairs and ombudsmen, other decision-takers as well as academics – a formidable combination of expertise in the operation of the administrative justice system. Among the themes addressed in the papers are the following: the effect of the changing nature of the state on current institutions; human rights and administrative justice; the relationship between decision taking, reviews of decisions, and the adjudication of appeals; and the overview of administrative justice, taking into account lessons from abroad. The new millenium provides an opportunity for the reappraisal of the British system of administrative justice; this volume presents an indispenable repository of the ideas needed to understand how that system should develop over the coming years. Climate Change Justice

Climate Change Justice

$27.95

Climate change and justice are so closely associated that many people take it for granted that a global climate treaty should–indeed, must–directly address both issues together. But, in fact, this would be a serious mistake, one that, by dooming effective international limits on greenhouse gases, would actually make the world’s poor and developing nations far worse off. This is the provocative and original argument of Climate Change Justice . Eric Posner and David Weisbach strongly favor both a climate change agreement and efforts to improve economic justice. But they make a powerful case that the best–and possibly only–way to get an effective climate treaty is to exclude measures designed to redistribute wealth or address historical wrongs against underdeveloped countries. In clear language, Climate Change Justice proposes four basic principles for designing the only kind of climate treaty that will work–a forward-looking agreement that requires every country to make greenhouse–gas reductions but still makes every country better off in its own view. This kind of treaty has the best chance of actually controlling climate change and improving the welfare of people around the world.

Climate Change and Social Justice

Climate Change and Social Justice

$27.26

The impacts of climate change can already be felt in society and on the Earth itself. As new evidence of the environmental impact of climate change is constantly emerging, we are forced to confront the significance of our political decisions about who will pay the price of responding to a changing climate. In the rush to avoid or reduce the repercussions of climate change, we need to ensure that the burden is evenly distributed or run the risk of creating injustice. Climate Change and Social Justice demonstrates that the problem of how to distribute the costs of climate change is fundamentally a problem of justice. If we ignore the concerns addressed this book, the additional burdens of climate change will fall on the poor and vulnerable. Jeremy Moss brings together today’s key thinkers in climate research, including Peter Singer, Ross Garnaut and David Karoly, to respond to these important issues.

Pluralism, Justice, and Equality

Pluralism, Justice, and Equality

$293.48

The essays in this book by a group of leading political theorists assess and develop the central ideas of Michael Walzers pathbreaking Spheres of Justice. Is social justice a radically plural notion, with its principles determined by the different social goods that men and women allocate to one another? Is it possible to prevent the unequal distribution of money and power from distorting the allocation of other goods? If different goods are distributed by different mechanisms, what (if any) kind of social equality is possible? Are there universal principles of jusstice which apply regardless of context? These and other related questions are pursued in depth by the contributors. The book concludes with an important new essay by Walzer in which he reflects on the positions taken in his original book in the light of the critical appraisals presented here. In his engaging narrative history of the rise and workings of Americas first juvenile court, David S. Tanenhaus explores the fundamental and enduring question of how the law should treat the young. The Japanese Way of Justice

The Japanese Way of Justice

$95

Criminal proceedings in which people can lose life, liberty, or reputation tell us a great deal about the character of any society. In Japan, it is prosecutors who wield the greatest control over these values and who therefore reveal most clearly the character of the Japanese way of justice. In this book, David T. Johnson portrays Japanese prosecutors at work; the social, political, and legal contexts that enable and constrain their actions; and the content of the justice thereby delivered. Johnson is the first researcher, Japanese or foreign, to gain access to the frontline prosecutors who charge cases and the backstage prosecutors who manage and direct them. He shows that prosecutors in Japan frequently harmonize to imperlatives of justice that Americans often regard as irreconcilable: the need to individualize cases alike. However, their capacity to correct offenders and to obtain contrite, complete confessions from criminal suspects. Johnson argues that this extreme reliance on confessions occasionally leads to extreme efforts to extract them. Indeed, much of the most disturbing prosecutor behavior springs directly or indirectly from the system’s inordinate dependence on admissions of guilt. The major achievements of Japanese criminal justice are thus inextricably intertwined with its most notable defects, and efforts to fix the defects threaten to undermine the accomplishments. Clearly written and skillfully argued, this comparative analysis will be of interest to students of Japan, criminology, and law and society. It illuminates unexplored realms in Japan’s criminal justice system while challenging readers to examine their assumptions about how crime should be prosecuted in their own systems of criminal justice.

From the American Revolution to the genetic revolution, the U.S. Supreme Court’s uneasy attempts to weave science into the Constitution Suppose that scientists identify a gene that predicts that a person is likely to commit a serious crime. Laws are then passed making genetic tests mandatory, and anyone displaying the gene is sent to a treatment facility. Would the laws be constitutional? In this illuminating history, legal scholar David L. Faigman reveals the tension between the conservative nature of the law and the swift evolution of scientific knowledge. The Supreme Court works by precedent, embedding the science of an earlier time into our laws. In the nineteenth century, biology helped settle the “race question” in the famous Dred Scott case; not until a century later would cutting-edge sociological data end segregation with Brown v. Board of Education . In 1973 Roe v. Wade set a standard for the viability of a fetus that modern medicine could render obsolete. And how does the Fourth Amendment apply in a world filled with high-tech surveillance devices? To ensure our liberties, Faigman argues, the Court must embrace science, turning to the lab as well as to precedent.

National Responsibility and Global Justice

National Responsibility and Global Justice

$55

Oxford Political Theory presents the best new work in contemporary political theory. It is intended to be broad in scope, including original contributions to political philosophy, and also work in applied political theory. The series will contain works of outstanding quality with no restriction as to approach or subject matter.Series Editors: Will Kymlicka, David Miller, and Alan Ryan. This book presents a non-cosmopolitan theory of global justice. In contrast to theories that seek to extend principles of social justice, such as equality of opportunity or resources, to the world as a whole, it argues that in a world made up of self-determining national communities, a different conception is needed. The book presents and defends an account of national responsibility which entails that nations may justifiably claim the benefits that their decisions and policies produce, whilealso being held liable for harms that they inflict on other peoples. Such collective responsibility extends to responsibility for the national past, so the present generation may owe redress to those who have been harmed by the actions of their predecessors. Global justice, therefore, must beunderstood not in terms of equality, but in terms of a minimum set of basic rights that belong to human beings everywhere. Where these rights are being violated or threatened, remedial responsibility may fall on outsiders. The book considers how this responsibility should be allocated, and how far citizens of democratic societies must limit their pursuit of domestic objectives in order to discharge their global obligations. The book presents a systematic challenge to existing theories of global justice without retreating to a narrow nationalism that denies that we have any responsibilities to the world's poor. It combines discussion of practical questions such as immigration and foreign aid with philosophical exploration of, for instance, the different senses of responsibility, and the grounds of human rights.

English Criminal Justice in the 19th Century

English Criminal Justice in the 19th Century

$173.58

While it is easy to assume that the system of criminal justice in nineteenthcentury England was not unlike the modern one, in many ways it was very different, particularly before the series of Victorian reforms that gradually codified a system dependent on judgemade precedent. In the first half of the century capital cases often tried almost summarily, with the accused not being adequately represented and without a system of appeal. There were also fundamental differences in procedure and in the rules of evidence, as indeed there were in attitudes towards crime and criminals. David Bentley has provided an account of the nineteenthcentury criminal justice system as a whole, from the crimes committed and the classification of offences to the different courts and their procedure. He describes the stages of criminal prosecution committal, indictment, trial, verdict and punishment and the judges, lawyers and juries, highlighting significant changes in the rules of evidence during the century. He looks at the reform of the old system and assesses how far it was brought about by lawyers themselves and how far by external forces. Finally, he considers the fairness of the system, both as seen by contemporaries and in modern terms. Author: Bentley, D. Lawyers and Justice: An Ethical Study

Lawyers and Justice: An Ethical Study

$109.01

The law, Holmes said, is no brooding omnipresence in the sky. If that is true, writes David Luban, it is because we encounter the legal system in the form of fleshandblood human beings: the police if we are unlucky, but for the (marginally) luckier majority, the lawyers. For practical purposes, the lawyers are the law. In this comprehensive study of legal ethics, Luban examines the conflict between common morality and the lawyers role morality under the adversary system and how this conflict becomes a social and political problem for a community.Using real examples and drawing extensively on case law, he develops a systematic philosophical treatment of the problem of role morality in legal practice. He then applies the argument to the problem of confidentiality, outlines an affordable system of legal services for the poor, and provides an indepth philosophical treatment of ethical problems in public interest law. Author: Luban, David Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 472 Publication Date: 1988/12/01 Language: English Dimensions: 9.27 x 6.10 x 1.14 inches

“The surprisingly vehement demonstrations at recent meetings of international monetary organizations have alerted people to the dangers of new global economic arrangements. Are there any fundamental standards within economic theory? How can economies and economic proposals best be measured? What does economic justice mean today? Spurred especially by the situation of women in the global household, Ann-Cathrin Jarl in this considerable contribution focuses on promising work in feminist economics and feminist ethics. Jarl articulates feminist critiques of neoclassical economic theory, objectivity in economics, and current understandings of rights, equality, and power. She derives an alternative social theory from feminist ethics, and she lands on provision for basic human needs as the benchmark of economic justice. In her final chapters Jarl offers a theory of economic justice aimed at strengthening the global household and bringing the claims of justice to the world of markets.”

This book will shine light on some of the hardtoreach places in the brain, showing the ways in which we are not the ones driving the boat. Why does the conscious mind know so little? What do visual illusions unmask about the machinery running under the hood? How much of our lives are determined by choices and behaviors that are hardwired, unconscious, and beyond our control? Do we have any management over who we find gorgeous or repugnant? How is it possible to get angry at yourself: who exactly, is mad at whom? If the drunk Mel Gibson is an antiSemite and the sober Mel Gibson is authentically apologetic, is there a real Mel Gibson? Why did Supreme Court Justice William Douglas claim that he was able to play football and go hiking, when everyone could see that he was paralyzed after his stroke? Why do people willingly give up their money to banks for Christmas accounts (and why dont monkeys do this)? Why do patients on Parkinsons medications become compulsive gamblers? Why do athletes follow routines, like bouncing the ball three times before taking a free throw? Why did Charles Whitman suddenly kill his family and shoot forty six others from the UT Austin tower, and what did this have to do with his brain? How much of who we are is in the genes, and how much in the environment? Does free will exist or not, and how does that affect our view of blameworthiness and credit? The emerging understanding of the brain drastically changes our view of ourselves, shifting us from an intuitive sense that we are at the center of the operations, to a more sophisticated, illuminating, and wondrous view of the situation Author: Eagleman, David M., Ph.D. Subtitle: The Secret Lives of the Brain Publication Date: 2011/05/31 Number of Pages: 290 Binding Type: Hardcover Language: English Depth: 1.25 Width: 6.50 Height: 10.25

The Terrorists Gambit by Landt, David [Paperback]

The Terrorists Gambit by Landt, David [Paperback]

$34.48

For years the anticorporate vigilantes called the September Alliance have been operating in the cloak of the general population. Targeting abusive corporations, theyve avenged layoffs, defended the environment, and killed men who raided pensions. Branded as terrorists by the media, they proudly bear that name, and vow to bring even more terror to the boardrooms and trading floors of the Empire. Contemptuous of the police, believing justice and the law to be separate, and ready to use violence on a personal level, their vendetta against corporate evildoers struggles without major effect. In desperation, they turn to Pixie, their petite but not so sweet operative in River Valley to recruit someone who will reenergize their quest for justice. Pixie does what no one expects, and seeks out not a radical idealist, but a shy misfit. She seduces a naive, trusting college student named Nicholas Papadopoulos and turns him into the most prolific killer the September Alliance has ever seen… Nicky Pops Author: Landt, David Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 372 Publication Date: 2006/06/01 Language: English Dimensions: 9.00 x 6.00 x 0.83 inches
