What would you do to a horse that bucks you or starts to?

I was riding Tango bareback today, and he kind of bucked me. You know how they kind of jump before they buck? He did that with a tiny buck. I am getting his trainer out here tomorrow. I kicked him and spun him in circles. Did I do the right thing? What would you have done?

Like the others have said you did the right thing. The only thing I have to add is this, did you notice his “tell” before he did it. Most horses have some sort of tell. You need to get good at seeing it and preventing the buck before it happens.

My ara-appy’s tell was that he would prick his ears a certain way and bring his head up just a touch. When I’d see those I could usually wiggle one foot back and forth and half halt with the opposite hand. This was often enough to distract him from his planned misbehavior and stop the buck before it happened. Sometimes it wasn’t and then I’d need to spin him. It might take you a long time to recognize his tell and figure out a way to distract him before he misbehaves.
