I think this would go down to be the best tag match in history. Both teams are very similar and equally talented…..But I’ll go with the British Bulldogs( but not confident ).

The Great Court of the British Museum

The Great Court of the British Museum

$9.99

At the 250th anniversary, the British Museum undertook a huge redevelopment programme, largely facilitated by the removal of the British Library from its midst. Lord Foster’s Great Court is at the centre of the positioning of the Museum for the new millennium, creating at the same time a new civic space. A vast glass canopy curves over a specially-created piazza, with the dome of the famous round Reading Room at its centre. Lying at the heart of the Museum, the Great Court forges a link between the Museum’s important architectural history and a 21st century concept of building design on the grand scale. The Great Court explores the creation of this unique ‘urban room’, the impetus and background of the project, the architectural competition, the complex design and construction process, and the very role of the Museum itself.

The Parthenon Sculptures in the British Museum

The Parthenon Sculptures in the British Museum

$19.99

This book serves as a superb visual introduction to these magnificent sculptures. The book showcases a series of specially taken new photographs of the different sculptural elements: pediments, metopes and frieze. It captures the vitality of the sculptures in a group, an individual sculpture or an exquisite eye-catching detail, such as the mane of a horse, a human foot, the swish of drapery or a youthful head bowed in thought. An introduction sets the sculptures in their cultural and art-historical context. A brief account of the Parthenon’s history is followed by a discussion of the sculptures as architecture and an overview of their subject matter and possible meaning for the people of Ancient Athens.

The Bible in the British Museum

The Bible in the British Museum

$12.99

The links between archaeology and the Bible have fascinated generations of archaeologists and biblical scholars who seek documentation of events narrated in the Bible. The British Museum’s collections include numerous inscribed objects, scripts and pictorial reliefs which provide such evidence. There is, for example, a Babylonian clay tablet which records Nebuchadnezzar’s siege of Jerusalem in 597 BC, as narrated in the book of Jeremiah. For this book the author has selected over 70 such ‘documents’, mainly from western Asia, with some examples included from Greece, Egypt and Asia Minor, dating from the period of the Patriarchs to the New Testament times, c.2000 BC to c.AD 100. He transliterates and translates the ancient texts, which include cuneiform, Aramaic and Hebrew, and discusses the contribution they make to our knowledge of the culture and history of biblical times. Each object is illustrated in black and white.

Caricatures of the Peoples of the British Isles

Caricatures of the Peoples of the British Isles

$9.99

The political satirical print enjoyed its heyday during the 18th and early 19th century and was the predecessor of modern newspaper cartoons. Their power lies in the startling combination of draughtsmanship, merciless humour and often disturbing insights into social and political scenarios. To mark the three-hundred year anniversary of the formation of the United Kingdom (finalised by the Act of Union in 1707) this book presents a selection of works from the Museum’s 20,000 work collection of satirical and political prints. The thematic exploration of caricatures and stereotypes of (and by) the differing UK countries showcases some of the best comic moments in cartooning. It reveals the differing attitudes that the English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish have held towards one another over the centuries. Popular artists such as Gillray, Rowlandson and Scarfe all have contributions to make on this fascinating theme. The resulting giftbook brilliantly highlights attitudes and events in British

Catalogue of Terracottas in the British Museum

Catalogue of Terracottas in the British Museum

$120

This, the fourth in the British Museum’s series of terracottas catalogues, features terracottas found in Egypt and dating from the victory of Alexander in 332 BC and the succeeding Ptolemaic and Roman periods until the Arab conquest in AD 641. No doubt purchased by both Greek and Egyptian members of the population, most such terracottas most probably came predominantly from the houses of city- and village-dwellers, and, placed in a house-shrine, would have been thought by their owners to have a protective function over their households in everyday life and in childbirth. They would also enhance the fertility of fields and animals. Some 830 terracottas and objects, arranged thematically, are discussed and illustrated. The introduction describes the scope and content of the material; its function and distribution within the villages and cities of Egypt; its religious context;the difficulties of dating it; and manufacturing techniques.

Iconic items from the Museum have been turned into accurate silver miniatures for this bracelet, and are as follows:Lewis Chess Piece: The original Lewis chess set was found on the Isle of Lewis under mysterious circumstances sometime before April 1831, and consists of elaborately worked walrus ivory and whales’ teeth pieces in the forms of seated kings and queens, mitred bishops, knights on their mounts, standing warders and pawns in the shape of obelisks.Egyptian Hippo: In Ancient Egypt hippos were identified with the goddess Thoeris, who was thought to bring luck and protection, and with Seth, the god of storms. Discobulus: This piece is inspired by a marble copy of a lost bronze original from the 5th century BC, thought to have been created by the famous sculptor Myron. Egyptian Mummy: Based on the anthropoid coffins of Henutmehyt, this type of human-shaped tomb was believed to provide a substitute body for the spirit if the mummy should perish. Kakiemon Elephant: Animal ornaments were a favourite in European homes, and from 1660 potters from Kyushu starting using this Kakiemon-style decoration of coloured enamels to create items such as these elephants. Egyptian Cat: Even today domestic cats are associated with the culture of Ancient Egypt and the goddes Bastet, and this charm is based on particularly fine example of a decorated cat statue, featuring gold rings, silvered collar and protective wedjat silver eye amulet. Greek Owl: This charm is based on the Silver tetradrachm of Athens which shows the sacred bird of the Goddess of Athens, Athena, the owl. The owl design remained unchanged on Athenian coinage for over 300 years, and the owls of Athens became familiar coins throughout the Greek world. Indian Buddha: This charm has been modeled on the Marble statue of tirthankara from the British Museum collection, from western India, AD 1150-1200. The Indian faith of Jainism arose at around the same time as Buddhism.

The stelae provide a window on the religion and language of the Carthaginians, both of which are still imperfectly understood. They date from between the 4th century BC to the 4th century AD, and in the catalogue they are divided into Punic and Neo-Punic, according to whether they pre- or post-date the Roman sack of Carthage in 146 BC. The Oxus Treasure

The Oxus Treasure

$5

The Oxus Treasure is a lively and accessible exploration of the individual objects that make up this beautiful collection of treasures from the Achaemenid era, and how they were eventually discovered. In May 1880 Captain F.C. Burton, a British political officer in Afghanistan, rescued a group of merchants who had been captured by bandits while travelling between Kabul and Peshawar. With them was a rich and impressive collection of gold and silver objects dating back to the fifth and fourth centuries BC. From the banks of the River Oxus, the entire hoard was, in due course, bequeathed to the British Museum. Consisting of around 170 objects, including vessels, a gold scabbard, armlets, coins and much more, the collection is an example of ancient goldsmithery at its very best. With exciting and descriptive insight placing the treasure into historical and cultural context, this book takes a closer look at the individual wonders that make up the Oxus Treasure, one of the British Museums most celebrated and cherished collections. The author John Curtis is Keeper of the Department of Middle East at the British Museum. Mainly interested in archaeology and history of Iraq and Iran circa 1000-330 BC, John has directed a number of excavations on behalf of the British Museum. John has authored several books, including Forgotten Empire: The World of Ancient Persia, with Nigel Tallis (British Museum Press, 2005).

RP 181: Cosmetic Sets of Late Iron Age and Roman Britain

$30

Cosmetic Sets of Late Iron Age and Roman Britain is the first comprehensive research publication of this insular British type intimately associated with bodily appearance and identity. Cosmetic sets are small two-piece bronze toilet implements for the preparation of mineral powders, probably colourings for the eyelids and face. Found almost exclusively in Britain, they range in date from the Late Iron Age to the 4th century. An association with fertitlity is indicated by the crescent shape, by overtly phallic imagery and by the twinning of male and female animal heads. Ralph Jackson’s research led to proper recognition of the type, and subsequently the British Museum has built up the largest single collection (160 examples). This catalogue includes not only the British Museum examples but also those in other museums and private collections throughout Britain. It focuses on typology and function but also considers manufacture, including the results of scientific analysis, followed by full discussions of decoration, context, distribution and dating.

Samuel Palmer

Samuel Palmer

$25

Palmer began his career as an artist at an early age. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy at the age of fourteen (one of his sketchbooks from this time is in the British Museum’s collection). In 1824, he met William Blake whose influence helped confirm his visionary approach to art. Palmer retreated into rural isolation in the village of Shoreham, Kent, his own ‘Valley of Vision’. Here he produced his most distinctive work, and gathered around him a group of artists (including Edward Calvert and George Richmond) known as ‘the Ancients’. He married in 1837, and on his two-year honeymoon in Italy, his style turned to intensely coloured watercolours, with an obvious spiritual connection to his subjects. The striking watercolour ‘A Cornfield by Moonlight with the Evening Star’ is one of his finest works from the Shoreham period and was acquired by the British Museum in 1985 after a public appeal. Samuel Palmer was active during the great flowering of British landscape painting in the f

The Art of Benin

The Art of Benin

$19.99

A superb photographic introduction to the spectacular art of the West African kingdom of Benin, including the well-known brass plaques and heads. Newly commissioned , with stunning photographs, this book follows a beautiful tour of highlights from the British Museum’s collection of artworks from Benin. The author, Nigel Barley, is a famous anthropologist and writer, best known for his books about his experiences in the field. When the Portuguese made the first European contact with the west African kingdom of Benin in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, the kingdom was experiencing a golden age. Its authority on the Guinea Coast was expanding through military conquests, and during the sixteenth century it became a leading power in the region and a major trade partner for European merchants. Benin remained an influential independent state and a major political and economic power on the coast, though with periods of both decline and prosperity, until its conquest by the British in 1897. This sumptuous photographic book showcases a series of specially taken photographs of key pieces in the British Museums collection. It opens with an introduction to the kingdom, court and culture of Benin, which is followed by thematic sections including kingship, ceremony, women, Europeans, and animals. Throughout, stunning photographs of the works are featured alongside close-up details.

Premium Lewis Chess set

Premium Lewis Chess set

$550

This premium Lewis Chess set has a high quality wooden board, and is an authentic replica of one of the British Museum’s most iconic pieces. The remarkable chess pieces were found in 1831 on the Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides. No exact account of the discovery remains, but they apparently came to light after the collapse of a sand-bank on the coast of the island revealed their hiding place to a passing islander. 93 pieces from the hoard are known today. They are all carved from walrus ivory and include a belt buckle and some plain draughtsmen as well as the 78 chessmen. They date from the mid to late 12th century, and the style of carving, especially the intricate interlocking animal and floral designs on the thrones of the seated figures, indicate that they are of Scandinavian workmanship; however, their exact origin is not certain and they may have been made in Britain by a craftsman skilled in this style of Viking art. The British Museum bought 67 of the chessmen towards the end of 1831. Read more about the Lewis Chess pieces

$9.99

This documentary film accompanies the major exhibition, ‘Michelangelo Drawings – Closer to the Master’ held earlier this year at the British Museum. The film is presented by Neil MacGregor, Director of the British Museum and is filmed on location inFlorence and in the Sistine Chapel. ‘Michelangelo, A Film’ describes the way that Michelangelo’s drawings luminate his life, his artistic development, his religion and his inner torments. His drawings can be studied and admired as things of greattechnical skill and enormous beauty, but they show us something else as well: they show us Michelangelo thinking. Michelangelo would have felt exposed seeing us look at his drawings. And that’s what makes them exciting: they give us a thrilling insightinto how this genius sculptor, architect and painter worked: they bring us closer to the master.

This is the companion volume to one devoted to recent research on Byzantine jewellery published in 2010 and forms part of a series organised under the auspices of the British Museum Byzantine Seminar Series. Many of the papers are concerned with new research on objects in the British Museum’s collections. The conference brought together leading scholars from Europe, USA and the Middle East to discuss the most recent research in the field of Late Antique gems and cameos. This will be the first time that some many diverse papers, inter-disciplinary in nature, have been assembled in a single volume. The scientific papers address issues such as the typology and sourcing of gemstones which go beyond a narrow focus on the ancient world. Many new cameos and gems from important private collections are published here for the first time. This volume has a wide appeal for both specialists and non-specialists.

Bronze Discobolus

$2750

Reminiscent of the Townley Discobolus in the British Museum collection, this bronze statue shows the athlete stooping to throw the discus, a traditional Olympic sport. The Townley Discobolus in the collection is one of several copies made of a lost bronze original made in the 5th century BC by the sculptor Myron. The head is wrongly restored and should be turned to watch the discus. The original piece that this replica is based on is in the Vatican museum.

Rosetta Stone replica

Rosetta Stone replica

$99

Soldiers in Napoleon’s army discovered the Rosetta Stone in 1799 while digging the foundations of an addition to a fort near the town of el-Rashid (Rosetta). On Napoleon’s defeat, the stone became the property of the British under the terms of the Treaty of Alexandria (1801) along with other antiquities that the French had found. Exhibited in the British Museum since 1802, the Rosetta Stone was the key to unlocking the mystery of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, the knowledge of which was thought to have been lost forever. The importance of this to Egyptology is immense. Soon after the end of the fourth century AD, when hieroglyphs had gone out of use, the knowledge of how to read and write them disappeared. In the early years of the nineteenth century, some 1400 years later, scholars were able to use the Greek inscription on this stone as the key to decipher them.

OP 146: Cleaning and Controversy

OP 146: Cleaning and Controversy

$25

In 1937-8, in preparation for a new gallery given by Lord Duveen, an unauthorised cleaning of the Parthenon Sculptures in the British Museum was carried out. Initially the incident was hidden from the public, but it soon got into the press and a scandal ensued. Sixty years later, in response to a revival of public interest in this episode, an international conference was organised by the Greek and Roman Department of the British Museum to re-examine the controversial cleaning and its aftermath. The aim of the conference was to examine documentary and visual evidence for the cleaning, to assess how and to what extent it had altered the surface of the affected sculptures, and to look at wider issues relating to the history and ideas of conservation. In this volume Ian Jenkins has gathered together all the relevant documents, including reports, eyewitness accounts, correspondence and newspaper cuttings. He has evaluated these documents against the history of the cleaning of the Parthenon

The Late Roman Gold and Silver Coins from the Hoxne Treasure

The Late Roman Gold and Silver Coins from the Hoxne Treasure

$60

Discovered in 1992, the Hoxne Treasure is perhaps the richest cache of gold and silver coins, jewellery and tableware from the entire Roman world. The core of this volume is the catalogue of the 15,000 late 4th and early 5th century gold and silvercoins, together with an in-depth discussion of the production and supply of late Roman coinage. Hoxne’s silver coins are particularly interesting, and the book also contains ground-breaking discussions of the silver content of Roman currency as wellas of the peculiarly British phenomena of coin clipping and copying. The value of the Hoxne Treasure in shedding light on an otherwise dark period of British history also calls for a broader, non-numismatic perspective, and the volume includes animportant chapter dealing with the social significance of precious metals in the later Roman empire, particularly their role in the gift-exchange networks that defined and maintained late Roman imperial society.

Medals of dishonour

Medals of dishonour

$16.99

Alongside the long standing and well-known association of medals with glory and achievement lies another darker tradition of the medal as an indicator of dishonour. Medals of Dishonour will reveal this little-known history, and will also show internationally renowned contemporary artists engaging with the medal as a vehicle for political and social comment. The first part of the catalogue consists of a representative selection of about twenty medals of the 17th–20th centuries, including German and British medals on financial scandal and political corruption, a French medal showing Napoleon III as a cockchafer, German WWI anti-war medals, and two of David Smith' s Medal for Dishonour. The second part consists of medals and related drawings recently commissioned by the British Art Medal Trust from twelve celebrated contemporary artists. Artists were asked to make works focusing on important issues of our times. Subjects include war, race, ASBOs and our modern obsession with shopping.

This publication is the culmination of a ten-year project carried out by the author to organize, research and catalogue a collection of over 17,000 objects from the 1930s British excavations at Lachish (Tell ed-Duweir), which was acquired in 1980 by the Department of the Ancient Near East, British Museum. Lachish is a large multi-period tell site in Israel, situated some 40km southwest of Jerusalem, with remains dating from the Neolithic period onwards. Its major periods of occupation cover the Bronze and Iron Ages (4th to mid-1st millennium BC). In the Late Bronze Age Lachish was a large and important Canaanite city, known from the Amarna Letters, while in the Iron Age it was the second city of the Kingdom of Judah, the site of the Assyrian siege in 701 BC which is depicted on the famous reliefs from Sennacherib’s palace at Nineveh. The book is intended to make this important collection more readily accessible to researchers and takes the form of a detailed, annotated handlist. It is

 Stauer Flyboy 1916 Watch

Stauer Flyboy 1916 Watch

$149

Did the Red Baron Hate This Watch? We can’t speak for the top German air ace of World War I, but it’s likely he wasn’t crazy about chronographs. For the British, French and Yanks who fought ferociously in the skies over Europe, new multi-function wristwatches proved invaluable. These stopwatches helped time complicated maneuvers like barrel rolls in their Sopwith Camel bi-planes. During dogfights in the smoke and flak-filled skies, any advantage was welcome. Stauer honors the early chronographs with a historic masterpiece, the Flyboy 1916 Timepiece. The air during the Great War was filled with heroes, but one group of flyboys in particular caught our attention. In 1916, a group of students from Yale University, driven by patriotic sentiment and daredevil attitude, formed their own “Air Force” to get airborne for the Allied powers. Using their well connected families’ resources, these Bulldogs purchased their own planes and hired flight instructors. These Elis were from well known American families: Taft, Morgan, Roosevelt, Harriman, and Baruch. The press dubbed them “The Millionaire Unit,” but years of distinguished service proved that their commitment was no joke. Our designers pay tribute to these pioneering pilots with an updated version of an early cockpit classic. To honor these adventurers of New Haven, we went back to our own history books and studied the early aviator’s timepieces. The Stauer Flyboy 1916 is fused in rose gold and has three tachymeters and a moveable bezel to measure speed and ascent. The chronograph function allows you to measure elapsed time and stop on a dime. The interior complications measure elapsed minutes and hours as well as display a military 24-hour clock.
