People of the Big Voice: Photographs of Ho-Chunk Families by Charles Van Schaick, 1879-1942 $23.78 "People of the Big Voice" tells the visual history of Ho-Chunk families at the turn of the twentieth century and beyond as depicted through the lens of Black River Falls, Wisconsin studio photographer, Charles Van Schaick. Developing a condition known as “Liquor Recoil ,” David must avoid alcohol at all costs; the merest whiff makes him wobbly, and a quaff makes him crazy. Fortunately for David, he has a unique guardian angel watching out for him – his boss’ daughter, Mary (Elizabeth Taylor). Writer/Director Norman Krasna is famous for his modern fairy-tale romances, justly so, often building skyscrapers of screwball set-ups from one absurd element. Less noted, however, is his proclivity for wrapping the sweetness around a serious social issue. Little chance of that being overlooked in this Krasna film, the first of two Liz would do with Van Johnson, as midway through the story we veer off to directly confront racism and intolerance in post WW2 America. But don’t worry – there’s still the menace of company parties and toasts to keep the comedy coming. |

But even by its own high standards, this third of the series’ five seasons was a benchmark, beginning with the groundbreaking season premiere, “That’s My Boy???” A flashback episode, it finds Rob Petrie (Dick Van Dyke) recounting to Mel (Richard Deacon) the tale of how he became mistakenly convinced that he and Laura had brought the wrong baby home from the hospital — as all the documentation said “Peters” instead of Petrie. When Mr. Peters — future Mission: Impossible star Greg Morris — arrives with his wife to try to set things straight, the joke is on TV’s black-and-white racial barrier. This was, after all, September 1963. The classics just keep on coming: among them are “October Eve,” in which a nude portrait of Laura (the imagination reels!) surfaces in a New York art gallery; “Laura’s Little Lie,” in which Rob and Laura learn they are not legally married; “Big Max Calvada,” featuring series producer Sheldon Leonard as a feared underworld kingpin who recruits Rob, Buddy, and Sally to write a nightclub act for his untalented nephew; “Who and Where Was Antonio Stradivarius?,” in which an amnesiac Rob finds himself at a swinging New Jersey party; and “My Part-Time Wife,” in which Laura fills in for Sally at the office. Another series landmark is the Christmas episode “The Alan Brady Show Presents,” in which Rob’s boss — heretofore rarely seen, though much talked about and much feared — becomes a recurring character raised to iconic status by series creator Carl Reiner. There is, to be expected, the odd clunker (“Turtles, Ties, and Toreadors”), but, thankfully, there are no tortuous episodes about Sally’s luckless love life. Emmy Awards for best series, lead actor and actress, writing, and directing confirm that this was, arguably, The Dick Van Dyke Show’s very best year, and a season fans of the series will trip over themselves to own. The Dick Van Dyke Show – Season Five $30.03 Rated: NRSynopsis: When Mary Tyler Moore had to decide when to end her own classic series, no doubt she took inspiration from The Dick Van Dyke Show, which, after five years, went out pretty much at the top of its game (some unfortunate hairstyles notwithstanding). Series creator Carl Reiner and company saved some of the best episodes for last, beginning with the classic “Coast to Coast Big Mouth,” in which Laura inadvertently reveals on national television that Alan Brady is bald. The Dick Van Dyke Show was groundbreaking in its use of flashback episodes to further flesh out its iconic characters. Of the four Season 5 episodes to employ the device, the best are “No Rice at My Wedding,” in which a handsome soldier wins Laura in a raffle, and “Remember the Alimony,” which recalls Rob and Laura’s disastrous honeymoon. The show’s writers were particularly generous this season, providing ensemble members Morey Amsterdam, Richard Deacon, and Rose Marie with some of their finest half hours. Especially touching is “Buddy Sorrell, Man and Boy,” in which “the human joke machine” prepares for his bar mitzvah (certainly a prime-time first). From fifteen dozen eggs to 4500 postage stamps, the Robinsons seek to share their experiences of a big God at work during the challenges of ministry and family life. Their stories have impacted and encouraged many others who are just starting out on their journeys. They make their home in Calgary, Alberta and have four adult children.” |
